OLIVE OIL

The mouth-watering delicacies are seasoned with olive oil from Korčula whose top quality has been confirmed with protected designation of origin and protected geographical indication at the EU level since 2016. Olive oil tasting rooms are a must-visit for all healthy living enthusiasts.

U cilju prepoznavanja i očuvanja tradicijskih vrijednosti te povezivanja i dijeljenja zajedničkih kulturnih vrijednosti, Grad Korčula je pristupio i kulturnim rutama Vijeća Europe: “Ruta sv. Martina iz Toursa” i “Hodočasnička ruta Santiago de Compostela” (Camino Korčula).     

Meje are dry stone terraces built using a dry stone walling technique for the purpose of an intensive cultivation of wine, olives and other agricultural products. The art of dry stone walling is protected as intangible heritage of the Republic of Croatia.

On the island, you can see many small stone houses built using a dry stone walling technique, scattered around the island. These were used as a shelter and a place to rest while working in the field. 

   Vrtujci and torete are also built using a dry stone walling technique – by paving stone slabs in a circle. The roof is conical and has no structural wooden beams. In the past, they were used as a shelter, storage for tools and a place to rest. There are more than 15 of such structures that can be found in the vicinity of Vela Luka. The largest one is located in Gornja Njivica and is 4.23m tall. Torete (5) can be found in wine yards in Smokvica.
