OLIVE OIL

The tastiest bites are seasoned with Korčula olive oil, the top quality of which is confirmed by the prestigious Protected Designation of Origin and Protected Designation of Geographical Origin at the level of the European Union since 2016. Olive oil tasting rooms are certainly the right choice for devotees of a healthy lifestyle.

The island of Korčula is part of the cultural route of the Council of Europe "Olive Tree Route". In order to recognize and preserve traditional values and connect and share common cultural values, the City of Korčula joined the cultural routes of the Council of Europe: "Route of St. Martin of Tours" and "Santiago de Compostela Pilgrimage Route" (Camino Korcula).

"Meje" are stone fences built in the drywall technique, due to the intensive cultivation of vines and other agricultural crops. The art of dry wall construction is on the list of intangible cultural assets of the Republic of Croatia.

In addition to the dry stone walls, stone houses built in the dry stone technique are scattered throughout the island. They were used as shelter and a place to rest.

"Carousels" and "torrets" were also built using the dry wall technique - circular stacking of stone slabs. They are vaulted with a conical roof, without the support of wooden beams. In the past, they served as a shelter from the rain, for resting and holding tools in the field. There are more than fifteen of them in the vicinity of Vela Luka, and the largest is located in Gornja Njivica and is 4.23 m high. "Torets", 5 of them, can be found in the vineyards of Smokvica.
